Capital Rotary member Neda Beal is honored as the club’s 2016 Columbia Capital Rotarian of the Year by past president David Boucher (left) and Blake DuBose, president-elect for 2017-2018.  Beal was recognized for guiding service projects in local flood relief, in distributing dictionaries to third-graders in Richland School District One and in volunteering at Harvest Hope Food Bank.  She serves on the club’s 2016-2017 board of directors and is a multiple Paul Harris Fellow, signifying donations to the Rotary Foundation that funds international charitable programs.

Dreher High School graduate Victoria Bailey is attending the College of Charleston with the aid of a four-year $5,000 scholarship from Columbia’s Capital Rotary. She attended a recent meeting as a guest of Darren Foy, chair of the club’s scholarship committee. Bailey, a sophomore majoring in biology with a concentration in molecular biology, hopes to become an orthopedic surgeon. She’s a member of Alpha Epsilon Delta, a pre-health honor society, and takes part in undergraduate research in organic chemistry.

You are officially invited to participate in our 2nd Annual Capital Rotary Club Charity Fishing Tournament on September 19 to raise money for the Columbia Capital Rotary scholarship fund.

For more than 20 years, Columbia Capital Rotary has supported the educational aspirations of high school graduates in the Richland District One area by awarding continuing four-year college scholarships. These scholarships are based on a combination of academic performance, extracurricular activity and economic need. Applicants must provide information via their school guidance counselors, take part in a personal interview and cannot have a parent or grandparent with any ties to Rotary.

Event Details:

  • Date: Monday, September 19 @ 5:30am (Back up date for bad weather: September 26)
  • Guide: Each sponsored team will be paired with a local striped bass fisherman. You will need a fishing license. Guide will provide everything else!  Team size per boat should be kept to four (4) fishermen.
  • Sponsor: $600 per boat sponsor fee (includes fish being filleted)
  • Location:  Dreher Island State Park  (3677 State Park Road, Prosperity, SC)

CART Fishing Derby Fundraiser

Capital Rotary Club members, spouses and friends celebrated Rotary Night with the Columbia Fireflies minor league baseball team at Spirit Communications Park.  They were among more than 360 Rotarians from 17 different clubs in the district who signed up for an evening of food, fellowship and good sportsmanship, part of a fundraiser totaling over $1,000.  Nearly 40 Capital members bought tickets for the event and sat along the first base line.

Columbia’s Capital Rotary has honored five members as new Paul Harris Fellows, signifying $1,000 donations to the Rotary Foundation in their names.  They are (front row, from left) Denise Holland, Joe Reynolds, Abby Naas, Daniel Winders and Shane Lacaillade.  Club members who assisted in these donations are (back row, from left) David Boucher, Bryan Goodyear, Chris Ray, Ione Cockrell, Craig Lemrow and Mike Montgomery.  Rotary Foundation contributions help fund international programs promoting peace and world understanding.

Catherine Glen, a Global Grant Scholar for 2016-2017, is welcomed to Capital Rotary’s weekly meeting by president Tommy Gibbons.  The 2011 University of South Carolina graduate taught special education students in rural Japan for the past three years.  Her Rotary Global Grant scholarship funds a year of graduate study at Queen’s University Belfast in Northern Ireland, hosted by the Rotary Club of Belfast.  Glen is seeking a master’s degree in the psychology of childhood adversity.  She formerly worked with youth in treatment for substance abuse and mood disorders at the Medical University of South Carolina and was a Big Brothers Big Sisters volunteer.

Since 2010: 451 volunteer blood donations, potentially saving 1,353 hospital patients’ lives.

Matthew Pollard (left) and Harry Carter welcome a donor for Capital Rotary’s 2016 blood drive. The annual summertime event collected 61 pints, each helping to save the lives of up to three people. Over the past six years, the Columbia-area club has supported the American Red Cross with a total of 451 volunteer blood donations, potentially saving 1,353 hospital patients’ lives.

Capital Rotary Club president David Boucher (left) has been presented a Service Above Self Award by Rod Funderburk, District 7770 Governor for 2015-2016, in appreciation for outstanding and dedicated support of the international service club’s ideals.  “Service above self” is Rotary’s principal motto because it best conveys the philosophy of volunteering without expectations of personal reward, thanks or praise.
