Our speaker on Wednesday, January 24th was Mr. Carl Cox, Director of Development at Central South Carolina Habitat for Humanity. Prior to his joining Habitat in 2014, Carl was Director of Development with the Central Carolina United Way (NC), and before that, Carl served as District director for the Boy Scouts of America for several years. Carl earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Clemson University.
Our speaker at Wednesday’s meeting was Mr. Curtis Loftis, State Treasurer for South Carolina.
Referencing the Treasurer website: Curtis M. Loftis, Jr. is the state’s “private banker,” managing and investing the state’s funds. He is the custodian of more than $43 billion in State funds, including the state’s pension funds. He serves as Vice Chairman of the State Fiscal Accountability Authority, an executive body that provides oversight to such statewide policy matters as property, procurement and debt. He is the Chairman of the Board of Financial Institutions, which supervises state chartered financial institutions and supervises mortgage originators and lenders, finance companies, payday lenders, and title lenders, and is a member of the South Carolina Retirement System Investment Commission which manages the $30 billion retirement fund’s investments.
Mr. Loftis was elected State Treasurer in 2010 — winning all 46 counties in his first bid for public office — and was re-elected in 2014. Mr. Loftis owns several businesses and is the founder and sole benefactor of the Saluda Charitable Foundation, a charity that operates in Ukraine, Bolivia and Haiti. He is a resident of West Columbia, SC and is a 1981 graduate of the University of South Carolina.

Our speaker on Wednesday morning, January 13th was Chaplain and Lt. Colonel Brian Bohlman. Lt Col Brian Bohlman is an author, adjunct seminary instructor, behavioral healthcare chaplain, and has served in the U.S. Air Force Chaplain Corps since 1992. Among his numerous military and civilian awards, he was named the Chaplain of the Year in the Air National Guard in 2013. In 2002, his family founded Operation Thank You.org as a non-profit organization which inspires America’s bravest by providing a variety of thank you cards and outreach programs to current service members, wounded warriors, veterans, and military families. Proceeds from his books help support the ongoing work of Operation Thank You.org.
Lt. Colonel Bohlman spoke about his deployment to Afghanistan in 2013 as the Senior Air Force Chaplain at Craig Joint Theatre Hospital, Bagram Airfield.
He has served on the National Executive Committee of the Military Chaplains Association (MCA) of the USA and is currently the senior editor for the “Voices of Chaplaincy” book trilogy to be released by the MCA. He is a life member of the Military Officers Association of America, National Guard Association, American Legion, and Military Chaplains Association of the USA. He is also a member of the Association of Professional Chaplains. He and his family reside in South Carolina.
Capital Rotary president David Boucher (right) receives a diamond circle pin from Mark Bokesch as a new member of the service club’s Bequest Society. The Society is made up of Rotarians who have pledged $10,000 or more for the Rotary Foundation in their estate plans. Funds are used to improve needy families’ living conditions, increase food production and access to fresh water, provide immunization and medical treatment, and support education for international understanding and world peace. Bokesch is Capital Rotary’s director of Foundation giving.
Columbia’s Capital Rotary Club has honored three members for multiple donations to The Rotary Foundation, the international service club’s charitable corporation that funds programs for world understanding and peace. Mark Bokesch (left), the club’s chairman for Foundation giving, congratulates (from right) Mike Montgomery as a Paul Harris Fellow plus-three (representing an initial $1,000 donation, plus three additional gifts of $1,000); Neda Beal, a Paul Harris Fellow plus-one ($1,000 initially with an additional gift of $1,000); and Tommy Gibbons, also a Paul Harris Fellow plus-one.
Our speaker on Wednesday morning, December 16th was USC’s First Lady Patricia Moore-Pastides. In addition to being the University of South Carolina’s first lady, Patricia Moore-Pastides is an accomplished cook, successful public health professional, advocate for many worthy causes and author of two Greek cookbooks. Moore-Pastides received a sociology degree from the College of the Holy Cross and a Master in Public Health from Yale University School of Medicine and is a graduate from the University of North Carolina’s Management Academy for Public Health.
Our speaker on Wednesday morning, December 2nd will be Mr. William Hubbard. Mr. Hubbard is a partner of Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough where he practices in business litigation, business torts, and breach of fiduciary duty claims. Mr. Hubbard is the Immediate Past President of the American Bar Association. He currently serves on the Board of Trustees of the University of South Carolina and was Board Chairman from 1996-2000. Mr. Hubbard earned both his Bachelor’s and J.D. degrees from the University of South Carolina.
Matthew Pollard (center) was recently inducted into Columbia’s Capital Rotary Club by president David Boucher (right) and welcomed by his sponsor, Harry Carter. Pollard is a Dallas, TX native who grew up in Beaufort, SC, and began his banking career with Carolina First/TD Bank. He now manages business accounts for First Citizens Bank, working with companies having $1-$10 million in annual revenues. A graduate of the University of South Carolina with a master’s degree from the Darla Moore School of Business, Pollard is a member of Columbia’s 2016 Leadership Class, serves on United Way’s Young Leader Society Steering Committee and is a Ronald McDonald House board member. He’s married to the former Kate Shuler, a local CPA and native of Spartanburg.
Our speaker on Wednesday morning, November 18h was Mr. Bill Davies, Jr. Mr. Davies, Jr., formally a partner of Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP for 34 years, practiced law in Columbia, South Carolina in the areas of general litigation, general product liability, toxic torts and mass tort litigation. He has been retired since January 1, 2010. Active in community affairs, Mr. Davies served on the board of directors of the Family Service Center, the Harvest Hope Food Bank, and the United Way of the Midlands. Mr. Davies also served on the Citadel Class of 1964 50th Reunion Capital Campaign Committee. He has been active in local Episcopal churches including St Martin’s in the Fields for 19 years and Trinity Episcopal Cathedral since 1992. He is a member of the Edisto Island Historic Preservation Society, the South Carolina Archives & History Foundation, the South Carolina Historical Society, the Charleston Museum, the South Carolina State Museum, the Sons of the American Revolution, the Old Edgefield District Genealogical Society, the Sons of Confederate Veterans, the Civil War Trust, the Blue and Gray Educational Society, the South Carolina Confederate Relic Room and Military History Museum, the Military Order of the Stars and Bars and the South Carolina Battleground Preservation Trust. Bill’s remarks on Wednesday will pertain to all things Robert Mills.
Prior to joining Nelson Mullins, Mr. Davies was a captain in the Judge Advocate General’s Corps of the U.S. Army serving on active duty for over 5 years with duty stations at Ft. Lewis, Washington as well as Frankfurt, Germany and Vicenza, Italy. Bill earned a Juris Doctor from the University Of South Carolina School Of Law in 1967. In 1964, Mr. Davies earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from The Citadel. Mr. Davies was born and had his basic education in Greenwood, South Carolina, while spending all of his summers at Edisto Beach, South Carolina. He has been happily married to the former Mahalie King Brown of Anderson, South Carolina since 1966. They have three children and nine grandchildren.
Tennent Manning (left) and Dr. Edgar Peacock (center) are welcomed to Capital Rotary membership by David Boucher, president of the Columbia-area club. Manning, a Columbia native, is an associate at Newmark Grubb Wilson Kibler, with professional interests including commercial real estate land acquisition and development, tenant representation, healthcare, retail, land and lender-owned properties. He previously worked in farming, banking and lumber and plywood sales. His memberships include the state’s Real Estate Commission, the Delta Waterfowl Foundation and the Palmetto Club. Peacock, an oral and maxillofacial surgeon practicing in Columbia since 1974, is an Aiken native. He has degrees from the University of South Carolina and from Emory University’s School of Dentistry. An Air Force veteran, Peacock met his wife, Jennifer, while stationed in England. The couple has two children and seven grandchildren.
