George Bryan III is a PGA Professional and the Founder and Director of Instructions of the George Bryan Golf Academy.

George is a graduate of the University of South Carolina. He was named 1998 Carolinas’ PGA Junior Golf Leader of the Year and selected by Golf Digest as one of the Best Teachers in South Carolina for 2000 and 2001. He earned SC PGA Chapter Player of the Year honors in 2003 and played in the 1999 PGA Championship at Medinah and the 2004 MCI Heritage.

Richard K. Bogan, MD, FCCP visited the Capital Rotary club on Wednesday 6/14/17. Dr. Bogan is an Associate Clinical Professor at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine and the Chairman and Chief Medical Officer of SleepMed Inc., both in Columbia, South Carolina. He is one of the founders of SleepMed, the largest sleep diagnostic company in the U.S.

Dr. Bogan received his medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, South Carolina. He completed his Internal Medicine residency at the University of Alabama Hospitals and Clinics and his Pulmonary, Critical Care fellowship at the University of Alabama School of Medicine, both in Birmingham, Alabama.

Dr. Bogan is board certified in sleep medicine, pulmonary medicine and internal medicine with previous certification in critical care. He has served as the medical director for several hospital departments and serves on various business, community, and civic boards. He has dedicated the majority of his medical career to creating standards of excellence in sleep disease management. In addition to operating a Columbia-based, 9-bed, accredited sleep center that serves as their flagship operation and training site, he has been involved in numerous clinical research trials and has published numerous articles in sleep medicine. He has been a consultant to the pharmaceutical and device industry and has lectured in local, regional and national meetings.

Capital Rotarian Darren Foy introduces Kate Elizabeth Chalfant of Columbia as the latest recipient of a $5,000 college scholarship awarded by the club, renewable annually for four years.  Chalfant will major in theater at the University of South Carolina.  As a high school student, Chalfant has been active in Columbia Children’s Theatre and its STAR (Student Thespians Achieving Results) program to raise over $10,000 for local charities.  She’s also been president of the S.C. Association of Independent Home Schools Statewide Student Council.  Foy is chairman of Capital Rotary Club’s scholarship selection committee.

Dr. Michel van Tooren (wearing white shirt, blue coat in photo background) explains industrial oven use in new materials manufacturing to Capital Rotary members on a tour of the Ronald E. McNair Center for Aerospace Innovation and Research.  Van Tooren is deputy director of the center founded at the University of South Carolina in 2011 and named after the late Challenger astronaut.  It supports the state’s second largest industry through aerospace education, research, outreach and economic engagement.  Capital Rotary’s tour was part of the club’s Fifth Wednesday program featuring local field trips in place of a regular weekly meeting.

On Wednesday, May 24 2017, Tammy Mainwaring, President of IT-oLogy spoke to the Columbia Capital Rotary Club. Tammy is an innovative IT leader with almost 30 years of IT management and teaching experience. Tammy has been successful in government, corporate and non-profit leadership. Her areas of expertise include education, change management, project management and community service.

Tammy began her career as a public school teacher in Cheraw, SC. She moved to Columbia in 2001 to take the job of Educatonal Technology Director for the South Carolina Department of Education. She then held positions of leadership with the SC Chief Information Office and Blue Cross Blue Shield of SC. Tammy’s career has come full circle as President of IT-oLogy. In her role, she has returned to her initial calling of being an educator and giving back to the community.

Tammy’s work has been featured in publications such as CIO magazine and THE Education Journal. She has been recognized by the US Department of Education for her innovative work with assistive technologies and educational technology planning. She often speaks at national and local events.

Tammy has a Master’s Degree in Information Technology Management from the University of Wollongong in Australia and a Master’s Degree in Education from the University of North Carolina. She also holds PMP, ITIL Expert, DDI Effective Facilitation and Master Teacher certifications. Tammy is committed to educating current and future IT heroes and growing IT talent in South Carolina.

This Wednesday, we had Tracie Broom talk about the Total Eclipse in August and what Columbia is doing for the event.

Tracie Broom is a public relations professional from Columbia, S.C., who develops and manages integrated communications campaigns, specializing in content development, social media, web strategy, customer experience and partnership building. Skilled in the art of getting the word out, she is passionate about introducing people to one another and spoke on the subject at TedXColumbiaSC in 2014.

Tracie worked as a professional writer, editor and event planner for 12 years in San Francisco, where she maintained a roster of clients ranging from Toyota and Hilton to Spa Magazine, Splendora, and Daily Candy SF. She is a graduate of Wesleyan University with a B.A. in Dance Choreography and Performance, and she was awarded a grant for studies at Harvard University.

Tracie is the marketing committee chair on the executive committee of the Foundation Board of the S.C. Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities in Greenville, S.C. She recently rotated off of a term as board co-chair at Slow Food Columbia.

John Boykin (center), vice president of Palmetto Specialty Transfer, is flanked by sponsor Katherine Anderson and president Tommy Gibbons after induction into Columbia’s Capital Rotary Club.  Boykin, a Camden native, is a University of South Carolina graduate who formerly worked in building product sales and in accounting.  He’s a member and past president of the Camden Jaycees, is on the board of visitors for Kershaw County Medical Center and served on the executive board of USC’s Young Alumni Council.  He’s married and has a two-year-old daughter.

Our speaker Wednesday was Mr. Charlie Banks, a managing partner with VentureSouth. VentureSouth is one of the largest angel investment groups in the United States. Charlie is an experienced serial entrepreneur who has founded, run, and invested in multiple manufacturing, financial services, building science, and real estate companies in South Carolina.  He was recently named to the “50 Most Influential People” and “20 under 40” lists in Columbia, SC by two regional business publications. He attended Newberry College and graduated with a BS in Business Administration.

Tiffany Ervin is an award-winning keynote speaker, spokesperson, and television personality who has worked as a radio/tv host and sideline reporter. She also owns an upscale ladies’ consignment boutique in Hendersonville, NC.

Tiffany believes true happiness comes from giving back to others, and she is often heard saying, “Work is a four-letter word. Volunteer is not.”  She has served on the board of directors for her local Chamber of Commerce, Gamecock Club, Rotary Club, Salvation Army and United Way Campaign Cabinet, among others. She was named Communicator of the Year for the Media Women of South Carolina in 2015, and is a volunteer for numerous other non-profit organizations.

A self-proclaimed “Rotary Geek,” she has been on two international service trips, served Rotary District 7670 as Public Image chair, district conference chair (three times), Membership Chair and Assistant Governor.  She is past president of the Four Seasons Rotary Club (in Hendersonville, NC) and a Paul Harris Fellow +2.  She was recently selected to serve District 7670 as Governor in 2019-2020.

Tiffany was selected to lead a breakout session on membership at the 2015 Rotary International Convention in Brazil, as well as numerous other Rotary district conferences and seminars around the United States.
