Begun by a non-profit organization in Charleston in 1995, our annual dictionary project aims to help students become better writers, active readers, creative thinkers  and resourceful learners by providing them with their own personal dictionary.

Capital Rotary donated dictionaries to nearly 850 students in 12 Richland County District One schools for 2013-14.  Over the past nine years, the club has purchased and given dictionaries to over 10,500 third-graders in the Columbia area.

A number of clubs in South Carolina and throughout the country are Dictionary Project sponsors. One of Rotary International’s six major goals is improving basic education and literacy.

Capital Rotary Club members Jenks Mikell (back row, left) and John Guignard (back row) are all smiles after distributing paperback dictionaries to third-grade students at Arden Elementary School, part of the club’s annual participation in The Dictionary Project.

Two ShelterBoxes Donated by Capital Rotary Club

In November 2013, parts of the Philippines were devastated by one of the strongest typhoons on record. Thousands lost their lives, more than 30,000 were injured, and millions displaced or affected.

In the spirit of their motto, “Service Above Self”, the Columbia Capital Rotary Club members internally raised $2,425 that funded two shelter boxes tremendously helping people in need in the Philippines. Each durable shelter box was shipped and contained essential resources such as:

  • A tent, blankets, insulated ground sheets, mosquito nets,
  • Water purification kits,
  • Cooking supplies such as pans, utensils, bowls, mugs and water storage containers,
  • A basic tool kit containing a hammer, axe, saw, trenching shovel, hoe head, pliers and wire cutters,
  • A children’s pack containing drawing books, crayons and other supplies.
ShelterBox USA is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to providing shelter, warmth and dignity to survivors of disaster worldwide. For more information on ShelterBox USA and the contents of a ShelterBox, please visit: http://www.shelterboxusa.org/about.php?page=9
